Incorporating design thinking and STEAM ethos in early education. #kinderSTEAM
“At JCDSRI, we honor children by challenging them. We give them structure and offer them the freedom to experiment and take risks."
-Adam Tilove, Principal of JCDSRI
KinderSTEAM is a Brown University/RISD STEAM club's partnership with the Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island, a local Providence school for grades Pre-K to 5th. JCDSRI stands out as a progressive education initiative because of their Design Thinking Lab curriculum, which is led by Sari Gutting in a dedicated Maker Space within the school building. Past workshops have allowed JCDSRI students to have a hands on experience with units on the moon, geometry, optical illusions, tangible coding, animal ecosystems or addition and subtraction. Each lesson applies methodologies and principals unique to design thinking. There is a lot of experimentation with material, iterative problem solving and storytelling to STEAM related content.
